🇺🇸 Americans own an estimated 393 million civilian guns.
🇨🇦 Canada: 12.7 million estimated civilian guns, but only ~2.1 million were registered in the 2017 dataset. Roughly 84% were estimated unregistered.
So America has the spectacular gun problem, while Canada has the quieter accounting problem:
"We regulate firearms very seriously."
"How many are there?"
"Approximately."
Maybe that's administrative failure. Maybe statistical blindness is politically convenient.
Either way, you can't census what you don't count.
